Product Design transforming to Design in 2022-23 -- stay tuned!

The mission of the undergraduate program in Product Design is to graduate designers who can synthesize technology, human factors, and business factors in the service of human need.

The program teaches a design process that encourages creativity, craftsmanship, and personal expression, aesthetics, and emphasizes brainstorming and need finding. The course work provides students with the skills necessary to carry projects from initial concept to completion of working prototypes. Students studying product design follow the basic mechanical engineering curriculum and are expected to meet the University requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree. The program prepares students for careers in industry and for graduate study.

Completion of the undergraduate program in Product Design leads to the conferral of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering. The subplan "Product Design" appears on the transcript and on the diploma.

2021-22 Requirements


  • 20 units minimum (one course in statistics recommended, e.g. STATS 60; see Note 1)


17 units minimum (9 units science; 8 units Behavioral Science):

  • Required: PHYSICS 41, 4 units (see Note 1)
  • Additional course(s) from the SoE Approved Science Course List
  • At least 8 units of Behavioral Science:

1. PSYCH 1 (required) 5 units
2. PSYCH Elective (courses numbered 30-200) 3-5 units OR HUMBIO Elective (82A and 160 are pre-approved)

Technology in Society

  • Choose one course from list of SoE-approved courses on Approved Courses; the course must be on the approved list the year it is taken.

Engineering Fundamentals (8 units min; 2 courses required)

  • ENGR 14. Introduction to Solid Mechanics (required), 3 units

  1. The School of Engineering list of approved science courses can be found on the Approved Courses page of the UGHB website. AP and IB credits can be used with approval from the OSA office in 135 Huang Engineering or by emailing and including both your program sheet and unofficial transcript.
  2. ME 216B & 216C meet the Writing in the Major (WIM) requirement for Product Design starting 2019-20; ME 115C fulfills WIM if taken 20-21 or after.
  3. ME 115C is the ONLY course requirement that can be waived if a student takes a quarter overseas. Students should plan their overseas quarter to take place in Sophomore year, or spring quarter of Junior year only. If the student elects to go overseas Junior year, the total depth units will be reduced by 4; this is approved without petition.
  4. You may substitute ME216B/C with ME206A/B Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability. If 206A/B is used, ME 115C will fulfill WIM)
  5. ME 216A must be taken for 4 units by all PD majors.
  6. Cumulative GPA for all courses within the ENGR Fundamentals and Engineering Depth categories must be at least 2.0; all courses listed must be taken for a letter grade (except those taken pandemic quarters Spring 2020-Summer 2021).

Instructions for Declaring Major in Product Design (ENGR-BS: PD)

Detailed instructions can be obtained from the ME Student Services Office (Building 530, Room 125). Note: Steps 5 through 8 below can all be completed in one day with advance planning.

  1. Print or download a copy of your transcript from Axess.
  2. Download and complete the program sheet from Program Sheet page. If you need instructions on how to download, consult the School of Engineering Student Affairs Office in 135 Huang or by emailing Please note: When completing the sheet, include courses you plan to take as well as those you have already taken.
  3. Pick up a Product Design Major Declaration form from the Student Services Office in Building 530, room 125, or download from the PD Intranet site

4. Email PD Program Admin listed on the declaration form for advisor assignment, appointment with PD Peer Advisor, and all faculty advisors’ current office hours.
5. Meet with  PD Peer Advisor to go through all declaration paperwork.
6. Visit your faculty advisor’s office hours and discuss the program with him/her. Have him/her approve the program sheet AND the declaration form.
7. Email declaration form, program sheet, unofficial transcript, and PD Undergrad email list form to PD Program Admin for advisor signature if campus office closures are still in effect due to Covid. If not, drop PD Email list form at Building 550, Room 151 and turn in the signed declaration form, program sheet, and unofficial transcript at ME Student Services, Building 550, Room 125
8. If campus closure is still in effect due to Covid and student is declaring remotely, PD Program Admin will email completed documents to the ME Student Services Office, cc'ing student as confirmation.
9. Login to Axess and formally declare your major. NOTE: Select “Engineering” as your major (NOT Mechanical Engineering), with a subplan in Product Design.
