CHINA INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Expectations & Agreements

Please read this agreement carefully so that you fully understand the expectations of the China internship program.

  1. Standards of Behavior: As a member of this program, you are a representative of Stanford University in China, and of the host company in which you are working as an intern. Your behavior will affect the reputation of this program and the opportunities available for future students. We are therefore counting on you to behave in ways that reflect well on the School of Engineering, Stanford University, and this internship program. We also expect that you will uphold Stanford’s Honor Code while participating in this internship.
  2. U.S. laws do not apply abroad. Neither School of Engineering nor Stanford University can intervene if you violate local laws and are subsequently detained or punished. The American consulate or embassy may not necessarily provide assistance should you have difficulties in the host country.
  3. Health Insurance: If any medical treatment is necessary, you will be fully responsible for the costs. Therefore, you will obtain health insurance (which should cover medical treatment worldwide, medical evacuation, and repatriation of remains) for this summer.
  4. Confidentiality: Any business, proprietary, or otherwise sensitive information acquired from your host organization must be kept confidential, and you will not disclose such information to any third party.
  5. Arrival & Orientation: Please make all arrangements for your travel (airline tickets, passport, visa, worldwide health insurance). Students are expected to arrive in Beijing on June 18th and participate in all scheduled orientation sessions (June 19-20) unless they have been provided an advance exception by the Resident Director (Xiaohong Shen) or Faculty Director (Pamela Hinds).
  6. Duration of Stay & Departure: The goal of this program is to give students an extended immersive experience in China. Therefore, we expect that students will remain in China for the full 12 weeks of this program unless they have advance written permission from the Resident Director or Faculty Director. If you need to make changes to your departure ticket (from China), please notify the Resident Director in advance.
  7. Housing: Some companies provide housing and some will provide assistance locating housing. If you need additional guidance finding housing, you should contact Internship Program Manager (Denise Chu) or Resident Director (Xiaohong Shen).
  8. Travel: We encourage students to take time to explore China during this program, particularly on weekends and after the completion of internships,. If you plan to leave Beijing for more than a few days, please let the Internship Program Manager (Denise Chu) and Resident Director (Xiahong Shen) know of your plans. Also, any travel plans should fit within the structure of the internships. You will be expected to work full days for the entire 12 weeks of your stay, so lengthy travel should be postponed until the end of the internship.  Please be aware that the reputation of the program and our ability to arrange internships depends on your dedication and reliability. If your travel and living costs for the internship are more than the stipend amount, you will be responsible for additional expenses.
  9. Liability: You will not hold Stanford University liable for any accident, injury, property damage, or other harm or loss arising directly or indirectly from your participation in the School of Engineering internship program.
